Guide to digital recipe books
How to create a digital recipe book worth keeping
A digital recipe book is most valuable when it preserves the recipe and the knowledge around it: who made it, what changed and why your household returns to it.
Begin with the recipes that matter
Do not start by digitising every cookbook tab and saved link. Choose ten to twenty recipes you already cook: dependable dinners, a few favourites and family recipes that would be difficult to replace. This creates a useful book quickly and establishes the format for later entries.
Collect from three sources
Public web recipes
Import the page or paste its recipe text. Keep the author and source URL attached.
Handwritten and printed recipes
Upload a clear photo, screenshot or PDF. A booklet can contain several recipes, which are saved separately, and a PDF's embedded recipe photo is kept when available. Review every OCR result carefully.
Your own cooking
Start with a blank recipe and write the version you actually make, including weights, temperatures, equipment and visual cues.
Standardise the useful fields
Use consistent fields for title, short description, yield, preparation time, cooking time, ingredients and ordered method. Separate optional metadata such as cuisine from the cooking instructions. Record temperatures with the scale and specify whether ingredient weights are prepared or unprepared.
Consistency makes recipes easier to scan, but do not erase meaningful details. “Mix until it looks like wet sand” may be more useful than a generic instruction copied into every recipe.
Preserve provenance and personal knowledge
Name the original author where known and keep a source link or description such as “Aunt Maria's card, circa 1995”. Use private notes for your changes rather than silently rewriting the source. This distinguishes the original recipe from your working version.
If you share a recipe, Big Recipe Book creates a revocable account-only link containing its cooking details. Your notes, collections, rating and favourite status are excluded, and the recipient can save a separate copy to their own collection.
Plan for portability and real cooking
A useful digital book should not be trapped in one presentation. Big Recipe Book can print a recipe and export its current data as JSON. When a recipe has a recognisable serving yield, change the serving count to scale supported ingredient quantities without rewriting the original recipe.
Review the collection occasionally. Fix unclear entries after cooking, use Organise recipes to move or delete several recipes at once, and make sure irreplaceable family recipes exist in more than one location.
